A Simple Tree Stump That MaKeS Perfect woodland Family PhotoS

Sometimes the best family photographs happen when you stop looking for the “perfect” spot.

While photographing a family at Alice Holt Forest, we came across something incredibly simple: a tree stump.

Nothing particularly fancy. No dramatic viewpoint. No beautiful bench or perfectly framed woodland scene.

Just a tree stump.

And it turned out to be one of my favourite little discoveries for family photography.

Why a tree stump works so well for family photographs

When you're photographing little children, one of the challenges is getting everyone at roughly the same height.

Parents are standing tall - and children can be considerably smaller.

That can make photographs feel a little disconnected, particularly when you're trying to capture natural interactions between parents and their children.

A sturdy tree stump can completely change that.

With a little one safely sitting or standing on the stump, they can suddenly be much closer to their parents' height. That means cuddles, kisses, conversations and those lovely little interactions can all happen at a much more natural eye level.

And because you're in the woods, it doesn't feel staged.

It just looks like a family enjoying an adventure together.

And then there's the light...

This particular spot had another little bonus.

The position of the stump meant I could place the family with the sun behind them.

Instead of having the sun shining directly into everyone's faces, placing it behind the family creates a softer, more atmospheric image. You can get beautiful warmth around the edges of hair, a little sun flare and that gorgeous golden glow through the trees.

It's particularly lovely in woodland, where the trees naturally help to filter the light.

Of course, the exact result depends on the time of day, season and weather - but when everything lines up, it can be magical.

Letting children be children

One of my favourite things about outdoor family photography is that I don't want children to feel like they're being asked to pose for an hour.

I'd much rather give them something to do. Climb. Explore. Run. Jump. Sit on a tree stump. Look for sticks.

And, inevitably, find something they absolutely must show Mum and Dad.

Those little activities give me opportunities to photograph genuine interactions rather than asking everyone to stare at the camera.

The result is a gallery that feels much more like your family, rather than a collection of perfectly posed photographs.

Alice Holt is full of little woodland photography opportunities

This is why I love photographing families at places like Alice Holt.

You don't necessarily need a spectacular viewpoint or a carefully planned backdrop.

Woodland gives you so many little pockets of opportunity - a clearing between the trees, a fallen log, a winding path, a patch of beautiful light or, in this case, a simple tree stump.

As a Hampshire family photographer, I'm always looking at locations slightly differently.

I'm thinking about where the light falls, where children can explore safely, how we can create different heights within a family and where we can find those little moments that make an image feel natural.

Sometimes the simplest things make the best photographs.

And sometimes, all you need is a tree stump.
